November 6, 10 a.m., the UNO community will gather outside Kirschman Hall on the Lakefront Campus to open the UNO Time Capsule which was dedicated on May 27, 1966 and re-opened for UNO’s 25th anniversary on September 5, 1983. The UNO Earl K. Long Library will host an exhibit of artifacts from the time capsule during the spring 2009 semester. Memorabilia will be added during the 50th anniversary celebration, and the time capsule will be resealed in spring 2009.

November 8, UNO Privateers vs. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars Club Football Game, 7:30 p.m. Tad Gormley Stadium, City Park. The Privateers will take to the football field for their first contest since 1970 in this kick-off event to UNO’s 50th Anniversary Homecoming Week. Tickets are $7 for adults and $2 for children under 18, and may be purchased at the UNO Bursar’s Office and from team members.

November 10- 15, Homecoming Week

Monday, November 10

    • Blue and Silver Office Challenge - Departments and colleges are asked to show their homecoming Privateer Pride by decorating their offices in blue and silver.

    • Homecoming Kick-off in the Quad, 12:30 p.m., Library Quad - Enjoy music, Quad decorating, a basketball throw competition and other entertainment novelties to celebrate the homecoming kick-off.

    • Homecoming Competition: Quad Display, 12:30 p.m., Library Quad - Organizations participating in the Quad Display will place their plywood displays along the Library Quad.

    • King and Queen Voting Begins, 12:30 p.m., vote online at www.vote.uno.edu - All UNO students can vote for their favorite candidate running for homecoming king and queen during the 50th Anniversary celebration. Voting will continue through Wednesday, November 12 at 9 p.m.

Tuesday, November 11

    • King and Queen Voting Continues, vote online at www.vote.uno.edu
      Homecoming Competition: Spirit Stick - Campus organizations compete to make the best looking spirit stick with the given materials in a set amount of time. Organizations gain points toward the overall spirit competition when they bring the spirit stick to homecoming events.

    • Homecoming Competition: Sidewalk Chalking - Campus organizations competing in the sidewalk chalking competition must have their designated sidewalks chalked with homecoming messages by 4:30 p.m.

    • Homecoming Competition: UC Banner - Organizations participating in the UC banner competition must have their banners hung by 4:30 p.m. in the University Center Deck.

    • Karaoke/Open Mic Night, UC Flambeau Room, 7 p.m. - Participants have the choice of picking a song and following along on the Karaoke monitors, or showing off another form of talent. Those running for homecoming king and queen will be introduced.

Wednesday, November 12

  • King and Queen Voting, Voting concludes at 9 p.m.; vote online at www.vote.uno.edu.

  • Mocktail Competition, Student Park, 12:30 p.m. - Student organizations will compete to make the best non-alcoholic drink to promote alcohol awareness.

  • Blacklight Basketball Fun, 7 p.m., Human Performance Center - Students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families are welcome to participate in the basketball activities or just stop by to check out the neon effects in the HPC. There will be basketball shoot-offs and games such as Round the World and Bump. Full basketball games will not be played. Everyone is encouraged to wear white to best experience the neon glow. To participate, contact Student Activities Council at sac@uno.edu.

Thursday, November 13

  • Pep Rally and Yell Practice, Noon, Library Quad - Meet the men's and women's Privateers basketball players and cheer them on to victory. Learn the yells that will be used at the bonfire and the homecoming game. Members of the homecoming court will be announced. Those wearing blue shirts can get in line for food.

  • Homecoming Competition: Game Day Banner - Organizations participating in the game day banner competition must submit their banner to the Student Activities Council in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership (Milneburg Hall, 159) by 4:30 p.m.

  • Privateers vs. ULL Volleyball Game, 7 p.m., Human Performance Center - Cheer on the Privateers as they take on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. For tickets, call (504) 280-GAME

Friday, November 14

  • Lady Privateers Pregame Tailgate, 5 p.m., Outside the Lakefront Arena - Join the crowd for food, music and fun before the Lady Privateers basketball team takes on McNeese State. There will be free hot dogs and soda for UNO students.

  • Homecoming Competition: Organization Relay - Organizations will participate in various relay activities at the Lady Privateers pregame tailgate to earn points toward their overall homecoming totals.

  • Lady Privateers vs. McNeese State Basketball Game, 7 p.m., Lakefront Arena. For tickets, call (504) 280-GAME.

  • Bonfire, Yell Practice & Fireworks, postgame, outside Lakefront Arena, north side - Everyone is welcome to visit the bonfire site for music, a yell practice, the torch procession and the lighting of the bonfire. Fireworks will conclude the event.

Saturday, November 15

  • Privateers vs. ULM Volleyball Game, noon, Human Performance Center, Join the Privateers for the final home game of the regular season as they take on the University of Louisiana-Monroe and celebrate Seniors Day.

  • Privateers Lakeshore Classic 5K Run/Walk, Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., Homer L. Hitt Alumni & Visitors Center, To register, call the Office of Alumni Affairs at (504) 280-2586.

  • Tailgating Festivities, 4:30 p.m., Lakefront Arena - Enjoy pre-victory celebrations on the north side of the Lakefront Arena and join the party or park in the reserved area to form your own tailgate. Get "fanned up" in the Privateer Fan Zone with free face painting, music and a basketball throw challenge. Concessions will be provided at near 1958 prices. Got to the official homecoming web site at www.sac.uno.edu for the list of participating tailgating organizations and colleges. (It is illegal for individuals under 21 to consume or distribute alcohol.) Organizations and college reunions that have registered include: Student Activities, Student Government, UNO Ambassadors.   • Privateer Costume Contest, 6 p.m., Lakefront Arena - Categories: Children, Faculty/Staff, Alumni, Students - Dress up as your favorite Privateer mascot in your best pirate costume. To participate, meet at the SAC tent at 5:45 p.m. Winners will take part in the halftime homecoming presentation; the winner of the child's category can be escorted by a cheerleader or parent.

  • Privateers vs. North Carolina State Basketball Game, 7 p.m., Lakefront Arena - Watch the men's team take on NC State. For tickets, call (504) 280-GAME. At halftime, the homecoming court will be escorted to center court by members of the UNO International Alumni Association. The homecoming king and queen will be crowned by Chancellor Tim Ryan.

  • Post-Game Homecoming Dance, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., UNO Lakefront Arena Auxiliary Gymnasium - Celebrate "50 Years of Privateer Pride" with your old and new friends. Enjoy the music of Tic Douloureux. UNO students will be admitted free with a UNO ID card. Tickets for alumni, friends, faculty and staff are $20.  Ticket prices include entrance to the post-game dance, food, water and soft drinks. A cash bar will be provided for those 21 and older. To buy tickets, call the Office of Alumni Affairs at (504) 280-2586.

November 18, 12:30 p.m. UNO Women’s Studies Founders Panel, Dougie Hitt Room (Room 407), Earl K. Long Library. Three founders of the UNO Women’s Studies Program, Martha C. Ward, Research Professor of Anthropology; Susan Mann, Professor of Sociology; and Madelon M. Powers, Associate Professor of History; will reflect on the history and their roles in the development of Women’s Studies as well as the institutional lessons learned along the way. Pamela Jenkins, professor of sociology; will lead a follow-up discussion on the program today. The UNO Women’s Studies program, an interdisciplinary program available through the College of Liberal Arts, was the first of its kind in Louisiana when it was founded in 1985.

Corwin is also host of “The Jeff Corwin Experience,” which is seen by more than 13 million viewers in the United States and is broadcast in more than 70 countries worldwide.
